Polaroid and Retrospekt Celebrate Frida Kahlo’s Life and Work
August 31, 2020—Polaroid and Retrospekt have teamed up with the Frida Kahlo Corporation to launch a new limited-edition Polaroid instant camera inspired by the legacy of the iconic and beloved Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo.
The Frida Kahlo Corporation is dedicated to sharing and preserving Frida Kahlo’s legacy and believes that Frida Kahlo’s iconic existence and extraordinary artwork creates a natural bridge to the rich legacy of the Polaroid brand and its commitment to self-expression and creativity. For the first time, these legacies will be intertwined on a vintage Polaroid camera dedicated to the artist.
The cameras, built by Retrospekt—the official Polaroid licensee working with the brand to revive vintage analog cameras, feature refurbished internal parts from vintage Polaroid 600 instant cameras made in the 1980s and 90s. The vintage components inside every camera are restored to work just like new. Then these original parts are wrapped into freshly molded plastic exteriors featuring colorful pixel graphics of skeletons, flowers and, of course, Frida Kahlo herself.
Retrospekt is donating 5% each camera sale to Together We Rise, an organization that seeks to improve the lives of children in foster care. Specifically, during the pandemic, Together We Rise is dedicated to providing emergency support for foster youth impacted by COVID-19.
This limited-edition camera will be available directly from Retrospekt and Urban Outfitters in the United States starting today.
